How to see if I'm blocked on Signal?

The question is asked frequently on the Signal reddit channel but usually it is soon removed because the moderators consider it is "violation on privacy". I think it is vice versa: the blocker has right to know what does the blocked person see after being blocked.

Also, it is poorly (read: not at all) documented in the Signal documentation that the answer can not be found easily.

And last: the behavior depends on (seemingly) random setting (behind advanced settings), that people keep testing it and then arguing "you see only one checkmark, see this screenshot" or "no, two checkmarks, see this screenshot" and blame the others lying.

Ok, here is the solution. I tested it on two phones with all combinations and here it goes:

  • If I have Settings => Privacy => Advanced: Allow from Anyone turned on (enabled/green) and I block you, you will see only one checkmark (the same you see if the message has been sent but not delivered).
  • If I have Settings => Privacy => Advanced: Allow from Anyone turned off (disabled/grey) and I block you, you will see two checkmarks (the same you see if the message has been sent and received but not read).
So, if the message is not read (= two white/filled checkmarks), you cannot distinguish if you are blocked, the phone is off or you are just being ghosted (because you probably don't know that setting on the blockers phone – and probably does not the blocker...). Just move on.

The technical explanation can be found on the community forum but the headline is so ambiguous that you won't find it when googling "what does the blocked person see on Signal" or "how to see if I'm blocked on Signal". Hence this small post.

In all cases: just move on. If someone is not responding your messages, just move on. If (s)he is in hospital or dropped their phone to the river, (s)he will get back to you if (s)he wants.
